We will be walking at least 10,000 steps per day. I have said it numerous times. Closer to 20,000 other days. SO, the first thing to do to prepare for a pilgrimage to Israel is to walk, walk, walk. Walking the mall several times per week through the winter months would help. Or walking a treadmill at home or gym. But make sure you have prepared yourself by walking. It will make for a more pleasant trip.
Second, we recommend some reading and watching to give you some background. To understand modern Israel, I recommend reading The Hope and The Glory by Herman Wouk. They are two historic novels that trace Israel’s history from 1948-1967 and then from 1967 to the late 1980’s. It gives tremendous insight into the forming of modern Israel. If you have some time, another historic piece that will give you insight regarding one of the places we will visit would be to watch the mini-series called Masada. Starring Peter O’Toole and Peter Strauss, it tells the story of the deaths of over 900 rebels on this ancient fortress mountain in the southern desert. O Jerusalem by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre is both a novel and a movie. It shows the initial days of the nation of Israel through the eyes of two friends, one a Jew and one an Arab.
Pray now for the trip itself and for all those who will be taking the journey with you. Pray for good health for all as well as safe travels. Pray for a spirit of anticipation and understanding. Pray for Nir and for Pam and me as we guide you along the way.
And of course be paying more closely to names and places as you read your Bible. You will be walking its pages soon.
